What is Billet-Doux

Billet-Doux (meaning "love note") is a historical gay romance graphic novel that is free to read online. It is built along the concept of finding love and self acceptance at a time where this was frowned upon.

Set in the summer of 1921, Billet-Doux follows the story of James Caldwell, a talented tennis player and lawyer in training. After his romantic endeavours are rejected by a close friend, James develops similar feelings for one of his father’s clients whilst learning how to accept himself during the suppressive early 20th century.

Suggested for readers age 16+ who enjoy a slow-burn, coming of age story.
Billet-Doux updates every Friday.

About the project

Billet-Doux developed itself from my love for the early 20th century. I am greatly fascinated by the lifestyle, the clothing, its music and so on. The 1920s attract me the most. Looking back at the era, the 20s were most prosperous and brought changes with them people weren't quite used to. The slimmer, fitted and less padded suits men wore making them look more feminine. And the straight, formless dresses women wore combined with their short hairstyles making them look less feminine. To me, it is a most inviting time period to write about. Like any era however, the 20s came with its own problematics. Even though times were looser, the fact that the era struggled with a still undeveloped society much like we do today, are what me made want to write about such problematics.
